viewing images that have been processed in lith/warm-tone.
Saturday and Sunday will be split between lecture and lab
with some time Sunday for viewing student's work. Most of
the hours on Saturday and Sunday will be lab time.

Tim Rudman's The Master Photographer's Lith Printing Course
is the definitive work on lith printing and is a prerequisite
for understanding and learning warm tone printing.

You'll need a copy of this book for the class.

Lith printing and warm-tone printing are very similar.
The difference lies in lith printing's infectious development.
Warm-tone printing's development is much less aggressive and
the print may be "pulled" over a relatively longer period of time.

There are many OLD books that may be helpful in learning
the processes and chemistry for warm-tone printing, but
they should be found and purchased after one has had some
experience printing in warm-tone/lith. Older books are
useful primarily in understanding the effect chemistry
has on different emulsions and how to create a formula
for warm-tone use based on the desired color and contrast.

Papers I particularly like:

Sterling Premium F Lith
Semi-Glossy, Fibre DW
Luminos Classic Warm - Tone
Kodak Transtar TP5

Sterling Premium F Lith is available from Freestyle Camera
Los Angeles. Make sure the maximum size you purchase is 11 X 14
or smaller. To generate an acceptable image you'll need
to expose the paper for up to two minutes at an image size of
7 1/4 X 11 inches. Anything larger has a tendency to "bleed"
the image across silver grains and creates an "out of focus"
condition on the paper. Thinner emulsion papers work better
than thicker emulsion papers, hence the "lith" papers are
better for this process. Thicker papers have more "bleed"
although they can be manipulates somewhat and of course the
colors are different.

You'll need to purchase a box of paper for use in class.

Chemistry you can purchase off the shelf:

Kodalith Super RT Developer
Macco Lith

You'll need to purchase chemistry (one of the above would do nicely)
for use in class.

We will also be mixing our own chemistry from scratch and
discussing the roles of the different chemicals with respect
to color and contrast. We'll supply the chemistry for
scratch mixing and it will be included in the lab fee.
